振り返れば、東日本大震災の経験から、わたしの暮らしには「祈り」が欠かせない習慣となりました。
何も特別なことはなく、毎朝、自分で決めた祈りの場所で、じっと目を閉じ、心を落ち着かせ、手を合わせる。それはとても心地よいことだと知りました。
人に請われて、お仏壇やお位牌などをデザインすることも増えてきて、人それぞれにとっての祈りの場が必要とされている、とも感じています。
このたび、「祈りの場」をテーマに展示会を開くことになりました。
場所は、わたしの活動を深く理解してくださっている生嶋唯行さんが営む、茶の湯をテーマにしたギャラリー「離岸」です。
新しくお披露目するものも含め、お仏壇、お厨子、お位牌、三具足、器、花入などの祈りとお茶の道具を、ギャラリー空間とお茶室に設えます。
木工、金工、陶芸のつくり手たちとやりとりを繰り返し、丁寧に心を込めて、形にしてきたものばかりです。
あなたの気持ちにかなう祈りの場をつくる手助けとなれば、幸いです。

SEKI DESIGN STUDIO My Life with Prayer
August 2 (Sat) – 10 (Sun) Rigan Gallery & Chanoyu (Kyodo, Tokyo)

Since my experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, prayer has become an indispensable practice.
Without any particular flourish, every morning, I go the place I have chosen for prayer, close my eyes, calm my mind, and place my palms together. I find this to be a very pleasing experience.
Increasingly, I’m asked to design Buddhist altars and memorial tablets, and I sense the need for each person to have their own place of prayer.
On this occasion, I’m honored to hold an exhibition on “Places of Prayer.”
The venue is Rigan, a gallery that explores the theme, chanoyu (“the way of tea”), and which is owned and operated by Tadayuki Ikushima, who possesses a deep understanding of my activities. Chanoyu Including new items to be unveiled, we will be displaying a variety of prayer and tea ceremony utensils, including Buddhist altars, small shrine, memorial tablets, mitsugusoku, flower vases, and vessels in the gallery space and in the tea room.
Each of these works has been shaped through active communication with woodworkers, metalworkers, and potters, and with earnest care.
We hope they will help you to create a place of prayer that responds to your personal needs.

関 洋 Hiroshi Seki
1966年、海山に恵まれた伊豆に生まれる。
中央工学校建築室内設計科卒業後、デザイン設計事務所を経て、1995年SEKI DESIGN STUDIO設立。主に、住宅、店舗、家具、道具のデザインを手がける。
結婚して子どもが生まれ、自分が望む生活が少しずつ見えてきた30代半ば、中古マンションを全面リノベーションして「家」を持ち、田舎と都会の暮らしにつながりを見つけた。
デザイナーとして、家族をもつ生活者として、家づくりに向き合った経験を仕事に活かすようになる。
現在は、祈りと茶の湯が暮らしの一部となり、その関わりをこの先も大切にしたいと感じている。

Hiroshi Seki
Hiroshi Seki was born in 1966 on the Izu Penninsula, south of Tokyo—a region blessed by both mountain and sea.
After graduating from Chuo College of Technology, he was employed at various design offices before founding his own architecture firm, SEKI DESIGN STUDIO in 1995. His designs include residential and retail works, furniture, and products.
In his mid-30s, after marriage and children, he gradually began to see the life he wanted for himself. He completely renovated a condominium unit as his “home” and found a connection between rural and urban living.
As a designer, as well as a man who is also has a family life, he began to apply his experience in designing houses towards his work.
Today, prayer and chanoyu are an integral part of Seki’s daily life, and he would like to continue to cherish this relationship.

離岸・生嶋唯行さんからのメッセージ
この度、SEKI DESIGN STUDIO による展示会を開催する運びとなりました。
SEKI DESIGN STUDIO を主宰する関 洋さんは、住宅、店舗、家具、日用品など、さまざまなデザインを手がけています。
離岸の設計もSEKI DESIGN STUDIO によるものです。
関さんは、祈りとお茶の道具のデザインから販売をなさっています。
それらは、ご自身の生活の必要性から生み出されたものです。
伝統や意味を踏まえたうえでの「素」のかたち。
それは、「いま本当に必要なモノはどうあるべきか」という根源的な問いへの静かで柔らかな答えでもあるのでしょう。
特筆すべきは、そこでは「行為のカタチ」までもがデザインされていることです。
その道具を使うとき、
自然と背筋が伸びる。
丁寧な所作が湧き上がる。
心が安らぐ。
モノと「ふるまいのデザイン」が一体になっているのです。
本展は、祈りと茶の湯の道具を中心に、SEKI DESIGN STUDIO のエッセンスを、空間全体を通して体感していただける構成となっています。

Message from Tadayuki Ikushima, Rigan Gallery
We are pleased to announce an exhibition of the works of SEKI DESIGN STUDIO.
Hiroshi Seki, who is the director of SEKI DESIGN STUDIO, is involved in a variety of projects that include residential and retail design, furniture, and utensils for daily use. Rigan is included among these, as one of Seki’s works.
Seki designs and sells utensils for prayer and tea ceremony. Their creation originated from their necessity in his daily life. They are “simple” forms based on tradition and meaning. They may be the subdued answer to the fundamental question:
“What are the ideal characteristics of our essential tools and utensils?”
When using these utensils, One’s back naturally straightens. Careful gestures emerge. And the mind is set at ease.
The object and the “design of the behavior” are one and the same. Explored thusly, even the “form of the action” itself is designed.
This exhibition is composed of the essence of SEKI DESIGN STUDIO, centering on the utensils of prayer and the tea ceremony, which you can experience throughout the entire space.
We hope you will enjoy the exhibition.
